24 Jan 2012 - Important Citizens' Review Board of Police Practices at Pt. Loma Library. Very important meeting for us. Lots of time for public comment and to submit our complaints for them to process.

26 Jan 2012 - (7p) Voices of a Peoples History event at San Diego City College - Saville Theater. This is the 100th anniversary of the San Diego Free Speech Fight, when city council prohibited soapbox oration centered at Fifth and E streets in the Stingaree District (Gaslamp). Prosecutors charged those arrested on felony charges of conspiracy, and police brutality was common. The Free Speech League sought to bring the cases up to jury trials to clog the system. There were an estimated 5,000 involved in one protest, with 41 arrested. The views of the Free Speech movement were similar to Occupy, on the wealth divide, worker's rights and later on, First Amendment rights. The circumstances of the movement are echoed today. Vigilantes would take Wobblies trying to go south to San Diego off the trains.

Statement by the United National Anti-War Coalition (UNAC)

on the Assassination of Iranian Scientist Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan

and the Growing Threat of War Against the Islamic Republic of Iran

Another Iranian scientist has been assassinated in Iran by a car bombing. This is the fifth Iranian scientist targeted in Iran during the past two years. This is a dangerous escalation of the covert activities conducted by the CIA and Israeli intelligence and their domestic spies in Iran against the government and people of Iran.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton stated, "I want to categorically deny any United States involvement in any kind of act of violence inside Iran." However, both the Israeli and the U.S. governments have admitted to covert activity in Iran. Irrespective of the actors, the assassination of law-abiding scientists living and working in Iran is a reprehensible act that should be condemned by all.

The fact is that the governments of the U.S. and Israel have declared Iran to be their enemy and have publicly stated that they will use all means possible, up to and including military attack, to stop the production of nuclear energy in Iran and to change the government of Iran. To this end, they have admitted to:

1 - Using hacking to disrupt nuclear energy facilities in Iran

2 - Conducting covert operations in Iran

3 - Deploying spy drones to Iran

4 - Imposing draconian sanctions and embargo against Iranian oil exports, banking and trade

5 - Deploying U.S. nuclear super carrier battle groups with destroyers and nuclear submarines to the Persian Gulf

6 - Threatening Iran with military attack

7 - Planning to hold in January the largest ever joint military exercises with Israel

The assassination of Iranian nuclear scientists falls within the covert activities in disrupting nuclear energy production in Iran. In addition, it works to create an atmosphere of fear among other Iranian scientists who want to work in their field of study. This is similar to the right-wing assassinations of physicians in the U.S. who perform the procedure of abortion, which is legal in the U.S. The terrorists who kill scientists aim to make it difficult for the Iranian nuclear energy industry to find scientists who would work there. However, the people of Iran have repeatedly stated their resolve to defend their right to nuclear energy.

Considering that Hillary Clinton threatened Iran with military attack, it is disingenuous for her to state that the U.S. denies involvement in any act of violence within Iran. A military attack on Iran, especially an attack on Iran's nuclear energy facilities, would produce results similar to a nuclear attack. (U.S. Concerned Scientists report.) It would be the most violent act against the people of Iran, resulting in hundreds of thousands of civilian deaths.

All the actions listed above, sanctioned by the U.S. government, are intended to weaken the Iranian government and economy, create an atmosphere of fear and dissatisfaction among the people, increase unrest, and decrease trust, all in the service of making it easier for a military attack on Iran. Of course, so far these actions have only strengthened the Iranian people's resolve to protect their country against Imperialism.

Similar U.S. actions are aimed at any government which fails to submit to the U.S. corporate domination. This disobedience or defiance by Iran is its real "crime."

It is extremely important that all international and especially U.S. antiwar and progressive organizations condemn these acts of assassination of innocent citizens as well as all forms of violent and aggressive actions by U.S. and Israel.

2 - End all sanctions against Iran

3 - End covert activities inside Iran

4 - End all war threats against Iran

Well my friends, I found out that Don Ainsworth was fired yesterday. I belive that the corporate machine fired Don to eliminate a much larger problem being brought to attention of the masses. Greyhound needs to take responsibility for the problem with drivers through education in areas like people skills training and anger management. I am angry that greyhound decided to handle the situation in this manner,and I Belive he should be rehired. When Don goes through the classes he should be reinstated. This is the 100th anniversary of the San Diego Free Speech Fight, when city council prohibited soapbox oration centered at Fifth and E streets in the Stingaree District (Gaslamp). Prosecutors charged those arrested on felony charges of conspiracy, and police brutality was common. The Free Speech League sought to bring the cases up to jury trials to clog the system. There were an estimated 5,000 involved in one protest, with 41 arrested. The views of the Free Speech movement were similar to Occupy, on the wealth divide, worker's rights and later on, First Amendment rights. The circumstances of the movement are echoed today. Vigilantes would take Wobblies trying to go south to San Diego off the trains.

Travelers to Cuba and music lovers are familiar with the song "Guantanamera"— literally, the girl from Guantánamo. With lyrics by José Martí, the father of Cuban independence, Guantanamera is probably the most widely known Cuban song. But Guantánamo is even more famous now for its U.S. military prison. Where "Guantanamera" is a powerful expression of the beauty of Cuba, "Gitmo" has become a powerful symbol of human rights violations—so much so that Amnesty International described it as "the gulag of our times."

That description can be traced to January 2002, when the base received its first 20 prisoners in shackles. General Richard B. Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, warned they were "very dangerous people who would gnaw hydraulic lines in the back of a C-17 to bring it down." We now know that a large portion of the 750 plus men and boys held there posed no threat to the United States. In fact, only five percent were captured by the United States; most were picked up by the Northern Alliance, Pakistani intelligence officers, or tribal warlords, and many were sold for cash bounties.

The Guantánamo story starts in 1903, when the U.S. Army occupied Cuba after its war of independence against Spain. The Platt Amendment, which granted the United States the right to intervene in Cuba, was included in the Cuban Constitution as a prerequisite for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from the rest of Cuba. That provision provided the basis for the 1903 Agreement on Coaling and Naval Stations, which gave the United States the right to use Guantánamo Bay "exclusively as coaling or naval stations, and for no other purpose."

In 1934, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed a new treaty with Cuba that allows the United States to remain in Guantánamo Bay until the U.S. abandons it or until both Cuba and the United States agree to modify their arrangement. According to that treaty, "the stipulations of [the 1903] agreement with regard to the naval station of Guantánamo shall continue in effect." That means Guantánamo Bay can be used only for coaling or naval stations. Additionally, article III of the 1934 treaty provides that the Republic of Cuba leases Guantánamo Bay to the United States "for coaling and naval stations." Nowhere in either treaty did Cuba give the U.S. the right to utilize Guantánamo Bay as a prison camp.

It is no accident that President George W. Bush chose Guantánamo Bay as the site for his illegal prison camp. His administration maintained that Guantánamo Bay is not a U.S. territory, and thus, U.S. courts are not available to the prisoners there. But, as the Supreme Court later affirmed, the United States, not Cuba, exercises exclusive jurisdiction over Guantánamo Bay. Amanda Williamson, a spokeswoman in the Red Cross' Washington office, noted that prisoners at Guantánamo "have been placed in a legal vacuum, a legal black hole." Amnesty International went further, noting an obvious gap between U.S. rhetoric and practice: "Given the USA's criticism of the human rights record of Cuba, it is deeply ironic that it is violating fundamental rights on Cuban soil, and seeking to rely on the fact that it is on Cuban soil to keep the U.S. courts from examining its conduct."

Although the Convention Against Torture, a treaty the United States has ratified, forbids the use of coercion under any circumstances to obtain information, prisoners released from Guantánamo have detailed assaults, prolonged shackling in uncomfortable positions, sexual abuse, and threats with dogs. Mustafa Ait Idr, an Algerian citizen who was living in Bosnia when he was sent to Guantánamo, charged that U.S. military guards jumped on his head, resulting in a stroke that paralyzed his face. They also broke several of his fingers and nearly drowned him in a toilet. Mohammed Sagheer, a Pakistani cleric, claimed the wardens at Guantánamo used drugs "that made us senseless." French citizen Mourad Benchellali, released from Guantánamo in July 2004, said, "I cannot describe in just a few lines the suffering and the torture; but the worst aspect of being at the camp was the despair, the feeling that whatever you say, it will never make a difference." Benchellali added, "There is unlimited cruelty in a system that seems to be unable to free the innocent and unable to punish the guilty."

Australian lawyer Richard Bourke, who has represented many of the men incarcerated at Guantánamo, charged that prisoners have been subjected to "good old-fashioned torture, as people would have understood it in the Dark Ages." According to Bourke, "One of the detainees had described being taken out and tied to a post and having rubber bullets fired at them. They were being made to kneel cruciform in the sun until they collapsed." Abdul Rahim Muslimdost, an Afghan who was released from Guantánamo in April 2005, said he suffered "indescribable torture" there.

U.S. and international bodies have verified reports of torture and abuse. Physicians for Human Rights found that "the United States has been engaged in systematic psychological torture of Guantánamo detainees" at least since 2002. FBI agents saw female interrogators forcibly squeeze male prisoners' genitals and witnessed detainees stripped and shackled low to the floor for many hours. In February 2006, the United Nations Human Rights Commission reported that the violent force-feeding of detainees by the U.S. military at Guantánamo amounts to torture.

The very existence of the Guantánamo prison camp harms America's international reputation. A January 2005 editorial in Le Mondeconcluded, "The simple truth is that America's leaders have constructed at Guantánamo Bay a legal monster." Moreover, it has created more enemies of the United States. Writing for the New York Times, Somini Sengupta maintained that Guantánamo Bay has been a setback in the war on terror insofar as it has "emerged as a symbol of American hypocrisy."

The list of Guantánamo critics is a long one. Archbishop Desmond Tutu dubbed it a stain on the character of the United States. Former U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan said the United States must close the camp as soon as possible. The Economist called for the facility to be dismantled, described the treatment of the prisoners there as "unworthy of a nation which has cherished the rule of law since its very birth," and claimed it "has alienated many other governments at a time when the effort to defeat terrorism requires more international co-operation in law enforcement than ever before." The National Lawyers Guild, Association of American Jurists, Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, and Amnesty International have all called for closing the prison camp and releasing or charging prisoners with criminal offenses in accordance with international legal norms.

In addition to legal and political problems with Guantánamo, there are enormous human costs to consider. Attorney Joseph Margulies has been to death row in six states and watched his client be executed. But as he noted, "I have never been to a more disturbing place than the military prison at Guantánamo Bay. It is a place of indescribable sadness, where the abstract enormity of 'forever' becomes concrete: this windowless cell; that metal cot; those steel shackles."

Indeed, Army Col. Terry Carrico, the first warden at Guantánamo, complained that when he was there, the men were held in "basically outdoor cages," adding, "It's what you would normally find in a veterinarian's facilities to hold animals." Carrico said "very few" of the men imprisoned during his tenure had useful intelligence. He favors closing Guantánamo, but doubts that will ever happen.

President Barack Obama said a year ago that he was committed to closing Guantánamo because it was a symbol that was "probably the No. 1 recruiting tool" on terrorist websites. But Obama signed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which bars any transfer of detainees to U.S. prisons, even for trial. The act also restricts the President's authority to transfer detainees to other countries. Of the 171 men remaining at Guantánamo, 89 have been cleared for release by a review conducted by the CIA, FBI, military, and Department of Homeland Security. But those men will likely die at Guantánamo because Obama refused to put the brakes on Congress's use of the issue as a political football in the NDAA.

In a recent op-ed in The New York Times, Harvard lecturer Jonathan M. Hansen wrote, "It is past time to return this imperialist enclave to Cuba," adding, "It has served to remind the world of America's long history of interventionist militarism."

Obama should heed Hansen's words. For the abiding presence of the Guantánamo gulag is not simply illegal and immoral. It also continues to be a symbol of U.S. hypocrisy, and makes us a target for more terrorist attacks.

San Diego Occupiers stranded last night in Amarillo were back on the road to D.C. at 5:40 a.m. this morning on another Greyhound bus. At this point, lease call 800-442-8480 on MONDAY, to complain to Greyhound about the treatment of the Occupiers. Thank you to all of you who responded last night!

From Michael All-In Ponsler: "Don Ainsworthy, Greyhound's most psychotic driver really screwed up tonight. This man was completely rude to all passengers waiting to board and when he saw our Occupy logos he made several negative comments. Once we were on the bus this guy began shouting at people to sit down and shut up. This did not go over well with any of the passengers, but I made it clear that we will not be treated so disrespectfully. He then came back and told me to get off the bus. I refused. The driver exited the bus, locked us in the bus for over an hour while he called the police. Police officers boarded the bus and agreed that the driver was being inappropriate. Surprisingly, the police attempted to negotiate on our behalf. The driver refused to allow us to stay on board and demanded that all the occupiers be removed. Of course, the police officers were required to support his "authority". We are stuck in Amarillo, TX until hopefully the next bus at 5:50 am. If you
care about people being discriminated against based on anything including political opinion call Greyhound corporate (not the Amarillo station) and let them know Don Ainsworthy must be removed from his position with Greyhound. The local Greyhound desk staff and baggage handlers confirmed that this man is complained against repeatedly. The police also said they are here to remove passengers far too often and almost always due to this particular driver's attitude."

During the past decade, this writer has remained skeptical about prospects of a US-supported war against Iran. The potential costs outweighed the benefits. Now, as the 2012 election year unfolds, I am not certain. The political and geo-political dynamics underscore the growing threat of war.

It's not that Barack Obama wants an airstrike against Iran, whether by the Israelis, the Americans, or the Israelis with covert US support. My respected friends Juan Cole and Mark Weisbrot are not so sure. They think Obama is laying the groundwork, and may be right. Obama hardly needs another war with unknown costs and consequences. But presidents are not all-powerful, and Obama can be forced to acquiesce unless there is a sharp increase in serious public opposition. As Trita Parsi, director of the National Iranian American Council, told DemocracyNow on January 12:

"We may very well end up in a situation in which, rather than the governments controlling the dynamic, the dynamics will control the government...this could escalate into a full-scale war."

The End of the "Long War" Doctrine

Obama Takes Stand Against Neo-Cons and the Pentagon

This article appeared at The Nation on January 13, 2012.

With this week's issuance of the Pentagon's new defense strategy, President Obama is ending the "Long War" envisioned by many neo-conservatives, counterinsurgency advocates and Pentagon hawks.

While there is much for progressives to criticize in the report-beefing up a cold war in Asia, increased cyberwarfare and secret operations-the striking new departure is the squelching of the Long War concept, projected by theorists like David Kilcullen to last another fifty years following the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan at a cost of trillions in tax dollars and thousands of lives.

The Long War has been opposed by some circles of the peace movement for several years, and I have written about it in The Nation and in an op-ed in the Los Angeles Times. However, virtually no attention was paid to the debate in the rest of the mainstream media, public debate or even in much of the alternative media. Instead, the Long War doctrine was advocated in obscure defense think tanks and among intellectual hawks in forums like the Long War Journal, a project of the Foundation for the Defense of Democracies, which claims to receive 12,000 views per day.

Peace Pressure Builds Entering Election Year

The Obama administration is withdrawing the first 10,000 American troops from Afghanistan, with another 23,000 scheduled to withdraw by September 2012 during the height of the national political campaigns. It is understood by many that the Obama administration would like to accelerate the pullout, and transfer the lead combat role to Afghan troops, before the coming election.

In response, many US military and diplomatic leaders, as well as all Republican candidates except Ron Paul, and even Afghan president Hamid Kharzai, are calling loudly for Obama to delay the troop withdraw until some sort of "victory" is secured over the Taliban. The politics of blame is very much in the air.

Obama is setting 2014 as the deadline for a massive US troop withdrawal, and a shift to an Afghan lead in combat, while the actual figures remain subject to fierce ongoing contention. The cost of Afghanistan to taxpayers thus far is $450 billion in direct funding, with total direct and indirect projected to be one trillion. In FY 2011 it has cost no less than $118.6 billion, more than double the FY 2008 bill. One thousand eight hundred sixty-two Americans have been killed in Afghanistan and another 15,000 wounded. According to the Department of Labor's latest numbers, US civilian contractor battlefield casualties include 1,115 killed and 14,297 wounded.

Judge Real Removed from Alex Sanchez Case

Judge Manuel Real.
Judge Manuel Real was removed as presiding judge in the gang conspiracy case involving Alex Sanchez and 17 others by an order of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals yesterday.

A new judge as well as new attorneys are being assigned to the case, which may be delayed. After being arrested in June 2009, Sanchez was freed on bail by a Ninth Circuit order in January 2010, and has been free while some 17 other defendants remain in custody.

The removal of Judge Real is widely and privately applauded by many defense attorneys in Los Angeles because of his reputation for irrationality in the courtroom. His decisions have been reversed on appeal more than any judge now on the federal bench. At one point in October 2009, the judge chastised this writer in the courtroom for publishing an article in The Nation describing Real as "surreal" and suggesting that a fair trial for Sanchez was impossible.

Obama to Order Contribution Disclosures?

President Obama may order the disclosure of $541 billion in campaign contributions by corporations with federal contracts, as a response to secret Super-Pacs and the Citizens United ruling. Such a move would infuriate defense contractors and big corporations and draw a sharp line for the 2012 elections debate.

Over 60 House members, led by Rep. Anna Eshoo, have been pushing Obama for months to issue the order. It would be an incendiary step, but would be strongly backed by citizens groups and the mainstream media. The order would be the only initiative exposing the role of money in politics during the election year.

In July 2011, Eshoo sent a letter, signed by 62 House Democrats, urging President Obama to issue the executive order. Now, according to Public Citizen, the pressure is picking up.

As Congress moves to authorize the US military to intervene against dissidents at home, it is well to remember the scale of the gulag already bulging with incarcerated terrorism suspects, mostly Muslim, already on permanent lockdown. (New York Times, December 11, 2011)

Despite the surreal world of politics, it would appear that the calls for military tribunals and denunciations of civilian courts are wildly inflated for partisan ends. But few if any candidates want to risk being called "soft on terrorism."

Adam Jung is an organizer for Occupy London.

Things are progressing here amazingly. We have had a much larger impact on British society and policy then I think we fully realize. In reality it has been nearly as much luck as organizing.

Ending up occupying on the steps of St. Paul's cathedral after being shoved back from the Stock Exchange created a situation that brought the Church of England to it's knees, prompting massive soul-searching and creating a sense that Occupy London was the new moral voice of the nation. The Church has now fully backed us and I meet with bishops and staff weekly to coordinate the launch of nationwide General Assemblies this March.

I have a lot of hope for what these democratic forums can spur on, and with the backing of the unions, I think we may be able to put the government in a defensive position, and perhaps, eventually, push for the dissolution of the coalition government. A lot of the work we are doing at this time we don't do under the Occupy name.

"No Surprise" We Spy at Home

That the CIA works with local American police departments "should not be a surprise to anyone," says Marie Hart, a public relations staffer with the Agency.

The CIA, which admits to working closely with the New York police department, has opened an internal investigation into allegations of domestic spying "to make sure we are doing the right thing," according to CIA Director David Petraeus. The CIA has embedded a clandestine officer within the NYPD, and the NYPD's intelligence chief, David Cohen, is a former CIA officer.

The pepper spraying of
11 peaceful protesters at the University of California, Davis, provides an opportunity to reopen questions long ignored. Is oleoresin capsicum, the key ingredient of pepper spray, known to be safe? And if so, why have the authorities never performed the health risk assessments that were required by law when the weapon was introduced in 1992? Are they afraid of anything?

I was a state senator who worked on the issue when the state's Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment was charged with conducting health studies during a three-year period in the 1990s. When the incident last month at UC Davis became a shocking global image, I checked with officials at OEHHA to see if the state has ever done a risk assessment.

The straight answer from acting director George Alexeeff last week was no. Not his agency, not the state's Department of Pesticide Regulations, either.

Three months before the Stonewall Inn riots in New York city in June 1969 which are commonly — but wrongly — thought to be the start of the Gay liberation movement, a group of Gay activists in San Francisco started the nation's first Gay Liberation Front. After one of their members was fired from his job for being Gay and "outing" himself via a photo in the Bay Area's legendary underground newspaper, the Berkeley Barb, the San Francisco Gay Liberation Front mounted the first Gay-rights demonstration against a private employer in U.S. history in March 1969. Later on the San Francisco Gay Liberation Front built a coalition with other radical groups in the Bay Area and ultimately got the Black Panther Party to endorse the Gay rights movement. Two participants in this history live in San Diego today and will be speaking to Activist San Diego at its January 16, 2012 general meeting.

They are:
• Leo E. Laurence, co-founder of the San Francisco Gay Liberation Front and its predecessor organization, the Committee for Homosexual Freedom, and currently associate editor of Zenger's Newsmagazine and activist with Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (L.E.A.P.), supporting an end to laws against marijuana; and

• Pat Brown, a participant in the early actions of the Gay Liberation Front who is currently active in the anti-circumcision and alternative AIDS movements.

Come to Activist San Diego's January 16 general meeting and hear a slice of Gay movement history that has been ignored or swept under the rug by East Coast-centric historians who have a hard time accepting that the roots of the Gay movement are in California. Hear from two of the pioneers who are both still active in human rights struggles. Update: Mike Garcia, Tahra Ludwig, Tito, and Chris McKay arrested at the Jerry Sanders Mayoral Address at BalboaTheater. Charges were felony conspiracy to disturb the peace, with bail amounts of $10,000 each (about $1,000 bond). This is unprecedented.

Military Refers All Charges Against Bradley Manning to Court Martial

Despite Clear Evidence of Bias, 'Show Trial' of Accused WikiLeaks Whistle-blower Set to Proceed

WASHINGTON, DC -- Military officers orchestrating proceedings against PFC Bradley Manning have referred all charges that were considered during last month's Article 32 proceedings to a general court martial. Investigating officer Lt. Col. Paul Almanza rejected a request from lead defense counsel David Coombs to consolidate the 22 charges into three charges, expressing concerns that the military is over-charging PFC Manning.

"We're disappointed but by no means surprised," said Jeff Paterson, a lead organizer for the Bradley Manning Support Network. "The investigating officer showed no concern for the conflict of interest caused by his dual employment with the Justice Department, or the taint of bias arising from his commander-in-chief, President Obama, who publicly declared Manning to be guilty long before he ever had his day in court."

Lt. Col. Paul Alamanza, the investigating officer who referred the charges to court martial, refused to recuse himself on the grounds that his employer -- the Justice Department -- is pursuing a separate investigation into WikiLeaks. He was also criticized for allowing all of the military's witnesses and evidence to be presented, while prohibiting all but two of the defense's witnesses from testifying, as well as evidence that could exonerate the accused WikiLeaks whistle-blower.

The recommendations, which now go before the Special Court Martial Convening Authority, include the most serious charge of "aiding the enemy." Legal observers who followed the Article 32 proceedings noted that military prosecutors never provided evidence of how these materials supposedly harmed national security.

"These charges contradict the administration's own impact assessments which showed that these WikiLeaks revelations posed no threat to our national security" said Kevin Zeese, a legal adviser to the Bradley Manning Support Network. "But since the Obama administration appears dead set on railroading Bradley Manning through their show trial, we can't expect them to allow such critical evidence or testimony to be considered. This evidence could have shown that these materials were improperly classified."

The new convening authority is expected to make a final recommendation on these charges with about a week, with the court martial anticipated to resume in three to five months.

Hundreds of supporters marched and demonstrated in support of Bradley Manning outside the Article 32 proceedings at Fort Meade last month. Organizers say that the Obama administration can expect even larger numbers at the court martial.

The holidays have arrived and people all over the world are
celebrating with their loved ones. Yet, this time of the year
symbolizes a period of continuing terror and constant uncertainty for
Palestinians imprisoned in the Gaza Strip, which remains today in its
fifth year under a criminal siege.

Three years ago, the state of Israel launched a 22-day brutal and
criminal attack on 1.5 million Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip.
This attack began on December 27, 2008 and continued until January 18,
2009. Israel sealed off all the borders of Gaza to prevent
Palestinians from fleeing to safety. The Gaza Strip was transformed
into a slaughterhouse leaving 1417 Palestinians dead (including 352
children) & 5300 permanently wounded.

To mark the 3rd anniversary of the 22-day massacre, Al-Awda San Diego,
together with other organizations (see below), will hold a
demonstration followed by a candlelight vigil. We demand an end to the
siege of Gaza and will honor all the martyrs and the victims who were

Citizens returning from Mexico should present an U.S. passport. (Otherwise, they need an official ID, birth certificate, and waiting in line when returning to the U.S. for a period of time to be decided by the border gate officer.) 9:00 am sharp- San Ysidro/Tijuana border-bus station. We will walk together to cross the border gate and travel to our locations in Tijuana using chartered buses for transportation.

9:45 am- The crosses at the border: More than 7,000 immigrants have died trying to cross the border.

10:30 am- Otay Industrial Park, Sanyo, Douglas Furniture, other maquiladoras: workers' labor conditions, labor rights and struggles

NOTE: We will visit the Tijuana industrial area but won't enter any factory.

11:00 am- Community Ejido Chilpancingo-Rio Alamar: industrialization, health, environment, urban development

Ocean Farming to Fight Climate Change

[Labor Network for Sustainability co-founder Brendan Smith is a
lifelong commercial
fisherman and runs a 60-acre organic oyster and seaweed farm in Long
Island Sound.
Smith uses his farm as an incubator for sustainable food production
and economic
development. His work ranges from invasive species harvesting to
re-imaging ocean
farming as a tool to curtail rising greenhouse gas emissions. At LNS
he works with
unions, farmers and others to push for a more sustainable food system
in the era
of climate crisis. The following article, published in The Atlantic

For decades environmentalists have fought to save our oceans from the perils
of overfishing, climate change, and pollution. All noble efforts -
but what if
environmentalists have it backwards? What if the question is not how to save
the oceans, but how the oceans can save us?

That is what a growing network of scientists, ocean farmers, and
environmentalists
around the world is trying to figure out. With nearly 90 percent of
large fish
stocks threatened by over-fishing and 3.5 billion people dependent
on the seas
as their primary food source, these ocean farming advocates have
concluded that
aquaculture is here to stay.

But rather than monolithic factory fish farms, they see the oceans
as the home
of small-scale farms where complementary species are cultivated to
provide food
and fuel - and to clean up the environment and fight climate change. Governed
by an ethic of sustainability, they are re-imagining our oceans with the hope
of saving us from the grip of the ever-escalating climate, energy,
and food crises.

The Death and Rebirth of the Ocean Farm

Ocean farming is not a modern innovation. For thousands of years cultures as
diverse as the ancient Egyptians, Romans, Aztecs, and Chinese have
farmed finfish,
shellfish, and aquatic plants. Atlantic salmon have been farmed in
Scotland since
the early 1600s; seaweed was a staple food for American settlers.

Unfortunately, what was once a sustainable fishery has been
modernized into large-scale
industrial-style farming. Modeled on land-based factory livestock
farms, aquaculture
operations are infamous for their low-quality, tasteless fish pumped full of
antibiotics and polluting local waterways. According to a recent New

"aquaculture"

ocean farmers
grow abundant, high-quality seafood while improving, rather than

SDG&E, Please Don't Take My Sunshine Away!

SDG&E wants to impose a new fee (aka TAX) on homeowners, schools, businesses, and others with rooftop solar. This is a shameless effort by this investor-owned utility to increase profits and control renewable energy sources. It would be devastating to the local clean energy industry and jobs. Because of increased costs, public entities, like school and water districts, would have to make further cuts to essential services. Homeowners who bought solar systems they could afford would be stuck with higher bills. We need policies to shift us toward clean energy and a sustainable planet, not away from it.

Co-host Michael Ratner and president emeritus of the Center for Constitutional Rights gives listeners an overview of the habeas corpus legal battles to close Guantanamo Bay prison and an in depth look at the corrosive effect the offshore prison has had on civil rights, and the U.S. Constitution. Despite the fact that the U.S. government has itself cleared more than half of these men for release, and despite President Obama's promise on his second day in office to close Guantánamo within a year, it has been almost twelve months since anyone has been released.

This is the longest period of time that has elapsed since the prison's opening without a single person being set free.The Obama administration has also extended some of the worst aspects of the Guantánamo system by continuing indefinite detentions without charge or trial, employing illegitimate military commissions to try some suspects, and blocking accountability for torture.

Condemn Use of U.S. Military to Escort Scab Grain Ship in Longview WA

Whereas, EGT, a joint venture led by multinational grain giant Bunge, agreed to hire union Longshoremen when accepting millions in taxpayer funds to build a huge new grain exporting terminal at the Port of Longview WA, but once the terminal was built has tried to void its contract and refused to hire ILWU labor. With the use of brutal police and courts and 220 arrests in the 225 member ILWU Local 21, EGT has managed to get enough scab grain across picket lines into the new terminal that EGT appears poised to load a ship soon in violation of their agreement with the port; and

Whereas, a solidarity caravan of thousands of union members and community activists – endorsed by ILWU Locals 10 and 21, the S.F. and Cowlitz County (Longview) labor councils and many others – is being organized to support our brothers and sisters in Longview, for an emergency mass protest when requested to do so, to confront union-busting by Wall Street on the Waterfront; and

Whereas, according to Longshore & Shipping News, within a month, the empty grain ship will be escorted by armed U.S. Coast Guard vessels and helicopters, from the mouth of the Columbia River to the EGT facility. The Coast Guard is an integral part of the US Armed Forces, operating under the Department of Homeland Security (except when engaged in combat operations abroad, as it did in Iraq , when it operates under the Navy); and

Whereas, this is the first known use of the US military to intervene in a labor dispute on the side of management in 40 years – not since the Great 1970 Postal Strike when President Nixon called out the National Guard in an (unsuccessful) attempt to break the strike. The use of the Armed Forces against labor unions is something you expect to see in a police state. This is part of a disturbing trend where the US military, acting as enforcers for the 1%, is poised to be used against our own people, as exemplified by the new law allowing the military to imprison US citizens indefinitely without trial; and

Whereas, now the US military, which has been oppressing, bombing and threatening other nations [a military that's paid for with the workers' taxes] is now being used against us, against American working people and our unions. To quote ILWU international President McEllrath: "ILWU's labor dispute with EGT is symbolic of what is wrong in the United States today. Corporations, no matter how harmful the conduct to society, enjoy full state and federal protection while workers and the middle class get treated as criminals for trying to protect their jobs and communities."

Therefore be it Resolved, that the San Francisco Labor Council condemn in the strongest terms the announced use of US Armed Forces (Coast Guard) to provide an armed sea and air escort for the empty grain ship, which is due to call at the new EGT grain terminal, Port of Longview, Washington, to load scab grain for export to Asia. We condemn this use of the military as part of a union-busting campaign to lower the cost of labor on the waterfront and destroy the union;

And be it further Resolved, that the San Francisco Labor Council join with allies in other cities on the West Coast to participate in any press conferences and demonstrations that are organized to denounce this use of the military to intervene in a labor dispute on the side of Wall Street on the Waterfront;

And be it finally Resolved, that the Council circulate this resolution to affiliated unions, Bay Area labor councils, the California Labor Federation, as well as labor bodies in Oregon and Washington, for concurrence and action, and urge labor leaders including Richard Trumka and Mary Kay Henry to take a strong stand against this brazen assault on our labor rights and civil liberties.

IN THE SPIRIT OF THE BILL OF RIGHTS...

FREE SPEECH AND ASSEMBLY MUST NOT BE DENIED IN CHICAGO

To: Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Police Superintendent Gary McCarthy

We the undersigned wish to express our deep concern regarding attempts by the City of Chicago to suppress peaceful protests during the May 19-21, 2012 NATO and G8 summit meetings. Specifically Saturday, May 19 is the date when sizable numbers are expected to gather in Chicago to exercise their democratic rights under the U.S. Constitution.

Following an extraordinary – possibly unprecedented – delay of 20 weeks in responding to a request for written permits for a demonstration at Daley Plaza (118 N. Clark St.) on this date, a denial was received. While we have subsequently been notified by the Chicago Public Building Commission that permits will be granted for Daley Plaza to still unspecified groups, the vague language of this response again raises serious questions as to the City's intentions and especially so since our original application was filed the day immediately following the public announcement of the NATO/G8 meetings – almost six months ago. This is, frankly, not acceptable.

Rather than repeat the City's past policies – which include the eviction of the celebrated Occupy Chicago encampment with numerous arrests – we would like the City to reverse course, welcome those attending protest events, and set a world standard for accountability, acceptance and respect for our guaranteed rights.

We greatly regret early positions reported in the Chicago Tribune on October 23, 2011 that the harsh crackdown on Occupy Chicago – in a clear violation of the constitutional right to free speech and peaceful assembly – was some sort of precedent for the City's planned behavior next May.

Designating the NATO/G8 summits as a National Special Security Event (NSSE) does not give city and federal authorities the right to suspend the U.S. Constitution. The First Amendment clearly protects the right to free speech and assembly.

Efforts to correct these wrongs should begin immediately by allowing Occupy Chicago to camp in a public area, followed by issuing the permits in a timely manner that will ensure an orderly, peaceful, family-friendly experience for the City of Chicago next May during the meetings of NATO and the G8.

In that spirit, we petition you to: cease and desist from all actions that limit the constitutional rights of protesters to free speech and assembly; grant the Coalition Against NATO/G-8 War and Poverty Agenda, without delay, permits for rallies and marches within sight and sound of the forthcoming summits; cease making veiled threats of harsh treatment and arrest of those who are planning protests and those who are considering participation.

We live in troubled times where fundamental incursions on the right to assemble and peacefully protest in Chicago are coupled with ominous threats to our constitutional rights in general. Perhaps the most disturbing is the National Defense Authorization Act, approved by Congress on Dec. 15, that grants the government the right to conduct secret and indefinite detentions without recourse to counsel and without charges presented in a court of law.

We look forward to a positive and specific response to this appeal. No one will benefit more than the City of Chicago itself. Once again, the whole world will be watching.

National Gathering of Occupiers at "Occupy Solidarity Social Forum"

Olympia, Washington, 1/10/12 — Occupiers from across the country will converge at the first national Occupy Movement gathering in Olympia this February. Occupy Olympia (WA) and the Alliance for Global Justice (fiscal sponsor of a number of Occupies, including DC and Wall Street) are hosting an Occupy Solidarity Social Forum on February 18-19 in the Washington state capital city. The self-organized, social forum-type gathering is open to all occupiers and allies.

Occupy Olympia agreed by consensus at General Assembly to host a self-organized gathering of the Occupy Wall Street Movement to network, build unity, share tactics, workshop strategies, discuss diversity and discuss how to develop action plans. Occupiers from Occupy Wall Street, Occupy Oakland, Occupy Washington, DC, Occupy Tucson, and Occupy Terra Haute (IN) are among the first registrants for the event.

The Occupy Solidarity Social Forum will be the first of what is expected to be a series of networking and visioning gatherings for the Occupy Movement over the next several months. Occupy Washington, DC is also calling for occupiers to gather in Washington, DC on March 30, 2012 under the banner NOW DC.

The networking meeting is being called in recognition that the movement will gain strength if we help open space for sharing, discussion and development. It is also agreed that the sooner we create that space the better for the movement and that a quick first effort will champion strong gains and garner authentic self organization. Together, Occupy Olympia and the Alliance for Global Justice will create the space for a wide diversity of occupy movement members to bring their knowledge and skills to the table to share in authentic ways with each other for the goal of growing the strength of the movement.

Registration will be required, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Individuals can register at http://occupyolympia.org/ossf-2012/. Participants should come prepared for tent camping or sleeping on church basement floors. Subject to funding availability, travel subsidies will be offered for participants from existing Occupations.
